I am happy to announce that on Thursday September 18th Nathan Nedorostek and Anthony Pappalardo will be live in the studio with me talking about their upcoming book "Radio Silence: A Selected Visual History of American Hardcore Music". The book hits the streets on September 30th, 2008. Check out http://www.radiosilencebook.com/

Radio Silence: A Selected Visual History of American Hardcore Music

By Nathan Nedorostek and Anthony Pappalardo

Hardcore music emerged just after the first wave of punk rock in the late 1970s. American punk kids who loved the speed and attitude of punk took hold of its spirit, got rid of the “live fast, die young” mind-set and made a brilliant revision: hardcore. The dividing line between punk and hardcore music was in the delivery: less pretense, less melody, and more aggression. This urgency seeped its way from the music into the look of hardcore. There wasn’t time to mold your liberty spikes or shine your Docs, it was jeans and T-shirts, Chuck Taylors and Vans. The skull and safety-pin punk costume was replaced by hi-tops and hooded sweatshirts. Jamie Reid’s ransom note record cover aesthetic gave way to black-and-white photographs of packed shows accompanied by bold and simple typography declaring things like: The Kids Will Have Their Say, and You’re Only Young Once.

Radio Silence documents the ignored space between the Ramones and Nirvana through the words and images of the pre-Internet era where this community built on do-it-yourself ethics thrived. Authors Nathan Nedorostek and Anthony Pappalardo have cataloged private collections of unseen images, personal letters, original artwork, and various ephemera from the hardcore scene circa 1978-1993. Unseen photos lay next to hand-made t-shirts and original artwork brought to life by the words of their creators and fans. Radio Silence includes over 500 images of unseen photographs, illustrations, rare records, t-shirts, and fanzines presented in a manner that abandons the aesthetic clichés normally employed to depict the genre and lets the subject matter speak for itself. Contributions by Jeff Nelson, Dave Smalley, Walter Schreifels, Cynthia Connolly, Pat Dubar, Gus Peña, Rusty Moore, and Gavin Ogelsby with an essay by Mark Owens.

At noon on Thursday July 31st, 2008 WNHU will officially launch it's brand new web site! Check it out http://www.wnhu.net
The new site is fully interactive... you can view songs as they are being played... you can see who is on the air... you can check out past playlists from ALL of the shows on the station... you can check out the weekly charts... and more! A big thanks to Zack Rosen for getting this up and running smoothly!

The Anti-Emo Empire! Radio show will be taking on a co-host starting in early August, 2008. We have always strived to make this radio show the best that it can be and after 7 years I feel that it's time to take the show to the next level. A few years ago I would receive phone requests from a Katie in New Haven... as she became more comfortable calling in, she told me that she had a new radio show on WSIN out of Southern University in New Haven called Dead Air. I viewed the Myspace page for the show and listed in her "heroes" section was the logo for The Anti-Emo Empire! and my name. WOW! Could I have really influenced someone to do their own hc/punk radio show? That was damn cool! Over the past few years Katie Vicious has become a friend and I thought what better than to take her into the Empire as a co-host. I mean we are an Empire, right?!?! I am 100% confident that Katie's radio experience, coupled with her youthful enthusiasm and shear love for all kinds of hc/punk is going to add an amazing dimension to the radio show. Not to mention take a lot of weight and stress off of my shoulders each week. Be sure to check out Katie and her radio show!

Some of you know that I have had a working relationship with Mass Movement Zine from Whales for many years now. v/a It Happened... But Nobody Noticed (double CD)

It Happened But Nobody Noticed/Temps Supplémentarie
Connecticut lies between New York City and Boston. In the 1970’s and 1980’s “punk” era, it was on the front line with the enormous changes taking place in music emanating from both those metropolises. In New Haven, Ron’s Place, Brother’s III, Oxford Ale House, were the hot spots. Statewide, other establishments like New London’s El & Gee, The Shandy Gaff in Devon, and Bridgeport’s Hotel St. George, were hosts to a diverse and exciting collection of musicians determined to be heard on their own terms.

In 1982 Gustav Records issued the compilation LP “It Happened But Nobody Noticed” containing 13 bands chronicling this fertile concentration of creativity. The album stood for over 25 years as a testament to the impressive talents of this Connecticut musical collective. Although this recording has become a treasured artifact, it could only tell part of the story. Now in 2008, another chapter is written with the release of “It Happened But Nobody Noticed/Temps Supplémentaire". 13 more great bands from the golden age of Southern Connecticut music join the original recordings on this two CD package.

In celebration of this event, Gustav Records is presenting a night of music at Cafe Nine, (250 State St., New Haven, CT 06511 203-789-8281) featuring performers representing many of the bands contributing to the project. We expect members of the Poodle Boys, No Music, Hot Bodies, Saucers, The Furors, Stratford Survivors, Subdueds, The Plan, Dada Banks, Valley Of Kings, The Excerpts, and others to be there to entertain you and once again flex the muscle of the New Haven Scene. The show is Friday, April 25th, starting at 8pm.

You can purchase a copy at Independisc.com!

On Tuesday, 7/17/07, our dear friend John Stabb was physically assaulted, just a block away from his home, by a group of 5 teenage thugs. John will be undergoing extensive facial reconstructive surgery starting on Sunday, 7/22/07.
With mounting medical bills, potential lost wages and limited insurance benefits we are pulling together all our resources in an effort to limit this burden for John and his wife Mika.
Please check back often, as new information will be added to this website as soon as it is received.

Trash American Style in Danbury, CT forced out!

Trash American Style in Danbury, CT, a long standing record store and staple of the CT hardcore/punk scene for the past 20 years is being
forced out of their 12 Mill Plain Road location. The store has been one of the biggest supporters of Smorgasbord Records since day one and we will all be affected by this. Below is an email sent by one of the stores owners, Malcolm Tent

First the good news: Danbury has gained a bigger print shop.

Now the bad news: Danbury is losing a cultural mecca. Thrown to the curb like........well, like....TRASH!!

Effective May 1st, 2007, Trash American Style will no longer be able to conduct retail operations at 12 Mill Plain Road. It’s official. Not a rumor. Tell everybody. We must stress that this is NOT because of bad business or hard times. If we had our druthers, we’d stay here at 12 Mill Plain Road forever. We love this location. It has been very good to us for 17+ years. Due to circumstances way beyond our control, and with little time to effectively plan any strategy, we are forced into action.

Kathy and I are going to stay in business, just in a different fashion for the time being. You’ll be seeing us at record shows, flea markets, colleges, festivals, gigs, vacant lots, and assorted roadsides all over the Northeast. Those of you across the globe will see plenty of Trash action on Ebay and elsewhere on the internet. There will probably be a storefront again, we just don’t know when.

Right now, we’re starting to discount a lot of the merchandise. You’ve seen how much stuff we have and we need to get rid of a lot of it. Shop at Trash and get it while you can.

Please send us your contact information if we don’t already have it. An email or snail mail address will be very helpful to us because we want to keep everybody informed as our situation develops. You can always check trashamericanstyle.com for updates!

Kathy and I want you to know that we love each and every one of you. You’ve given us the best 20 years that we could possibly ask for and we’re grateful to all of you for letting us serve you this whole time. We are not defeated and we will not be stopped. Our journey continues, just down a different path than the one we would have chosen. We hope to see you as much as possible along the path. LONG LIVE TRASH AMERICAN STYLE!

...Malcolm Tent

Early Social Distortion bassist ID'd in wreck

Officials say that Brent Liles of Fullerton was bicyclist killed in Placentia crash.
By ERIC CARPENTER
The Orange County Register

PLACENTIA – Officials on Saturday identified Brent Liles of Fullerton, former bass guitarist in one of the region's most influential punk rock bands, Social Distortion, as the bicyclist killed by a big rig on Thursday.

Liles played bass on the group's groundbreaking "Mommy's Little Monster" recording in 1983 and went on to play with other well-known Orange County punk acts such as the group Agent Orange. He was 43.

"Brent was a fun-loving guy who approached his bass playing with a lot of enthusiasm and that made him a lot of fun to be around," said Frank Agnew, a fellow musician and friend.

Liles, wearing casual clothing, was riding a small dirt bicycle westbound on Orangethorpe Avenue just after 11:30 a.m. Thursday, California Highway Patrol officials said.

As he entered the crosswalk at the Orange (57) Freeway, a big rig carrying a trailer turned right onto the on-ramp and accelerated, hitting Liles. He was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The driver, Javier Lopez of Rancho Cucamonga, was turning on a green light. He was not immediately cited, CHP officials said. The crash is still being investigated.

Liles joined Social Distortion in 1981 after a tumultuous beginning for the band, whose original members came from Fullerton and Huntington Beach.

He was recruited to play bass on "Mommy's Little Monster," which quickly brought the band national acclaim for its hard-driving music, raw vocals and themes of suburban alienation.

Orange County Register pop music critic Ben Wener called the album a "fundamental work" that set the groundwork for the West Coast punk rock scene.

Liles was featured in the limited-release film "Another State of Mind," which documented the band's early struggles on the road touring the United States and Canada in a pieced-together tour van.

Fed up with the band's internal turmoil, Liles abruptly left Social Distortion with drummer Derek O'Brien during a legendary New Year's Eve gig in 1983. The band soldiered on and garnered more widespread fame and even some pop-radio success under original frontman Mike Ness.

Ness did not return a phone call to his management company seeking comment.

Fans of Social Distortion said Liles was an important part of the band's history and he'll be sadly missed. The band's guitarist Dennis Dannell, who played with Liles, died of a brain aneurism in February 2000. The band continues on with a new lineup.

"I think most people think of Social D. and they think of Mike Ness. But they never could be what they are without some great supporting characters like Brent," said Sara Pendergast, 41, a longtime fan of the band.

"For people who love their music, it's like losing a member of the extended family."
